Electromagnetic Flowmeters

Electromagnetic flowmeters (magmeters) measure volume flow of electrically conductive liquids using Faraday’s law of induction. A magnetic field is generated across the measuring tube; as the conductive fluid passes through, an electrical voltage is induced and picked up by electrodes. This signal is directly proportional to flow velocity and therefore to volumetric flow rate, with modern excitation schemes supporting a stable zero point even in challenging liquids.

Because the measuring principle is largely independent of pressure, density, temperature, and viscosity, electromagnetic meters provide consistent performance across broad operating envelopes. The design has no moving parts and maintains a free pipe cross-section, which supports CIP/SIP cleaning, pigging, and low maintenance. These characteristics make magmeters well suited for continuous service where accessibility is limited or downtime is costly.

Magmeters are suited to conductive media such as water, acids, alkalis, and slurries, and are widely applied in water and wastewater management, chemical processing, and hygienic production environments. Typical duties include distribution monitoring, filling and dosing, process control, and precise measurement points - including custody transfer scenarios - where repeatability and low lifecycle cost are central.

In abrasive services and solids-laden streams - such as ore slurry, sand-water mixtures, or cellulose pulp - robust electromagnetic meters remain viable where other technologies can suffer wear or plugging. A wide range of nominal diameters supports everything from small-bore dosing lines to large transmission mains, while liner and electrode selections enable tuning for corrosion resistance, abrasion tolerance, and product compatibility.

Successful deployment depends on confirming minimum conductivity, maintaining a full pipe, and selecting liners, electrodes, and grounding methods appropriate to the medium and installation. Attention to earthing, air entrainment, and installation effects improves measurement stability, while digital interfaces and diagnostics simplify integration into control systems and asset management tools for verification, trend analysis, and condition-based maintenance.
