Temperature transmitters condition RTD or thermocouple signals into standardized outputs for reliable transmission and integration. Endress+Hauser describes three core transmitter form factors - DIN rail units for panels, head transmitters for installation in thermometer heads, and field transmitters for direct connection in the process area - along with broad communication options; some models also support wireless Bluetooth® parametrization for in-field setup.

Beyond signal conversion, transmitters linearize sensor curves, apply lead-wire compensation for RTDs, manage cold-junction compensation for thermocouples, and provide damping and filtering appropriate to the process dynamics. Modern devices also add sensor diagnostics, drift alerts, and configuration traceability that improve maintenance effectiveness.

Benefits include improved noise immunity, consistent scaling, and simplified wiring over long runs - especially when converting low-level millivolt thermocouple signals into a robust current loop or digital fieldbus. Standardization of outputs reduces integration variability across projects and supports consistent spares strategies.

Typical applications cover essentially any temperature measuring point where the control system expects a 4–20 mA, HART, or digital signal, including hazardous-area installations and electrically noisy environments. Head transmitters are common for compact assemblies; rail transmitters fit marshalling cabinets; field transmitters serve remote outdoor points where enclosure robustness and accessibility matter.

Selection is driven by sensor type support, required accuracy, ambient limits, hazardous-area approvals, diagnostics needs, and the plant’s preferred communication layer. Commissioning considerations include configuration tooling, security/access control, and documentation outputs so the transmitter settings remain recoverable and auditable over the instrument lifecycle.
