Device Configuration Tablets
Device configuration tablets for commissioning and maintenance of field devices.
Device Configuration Tablets
Device configuration tablets are rugged, portable platforms that consolidate field device access, configuration, and diagnostics into a single workstation that can travel with the maintenance and commissioning workflow. In the Endress+Hauser ecosystem, the Field Xpert concept provides a universal tablet PC used to connect to digitally communicating instruments, manage parameters, and document device status without carrying multiple handhelds and protocol-specific tools.
The primary advantage is speed with consistency: one interface for set-up, troubleshooting, and analysis across a broad mix of device types and vendors. Variants for hazardous (Ex Zone) and non-hazardous areas enable configuration work to stay close to the instrument, reducing the churn of “walk-backs” between the field and the control room. A touch-optimized user experience shortens task time for repetitive actions such as tag identification, parameter validation, and loop health checks.
Connectivity options are designed around real-world topology. Point-to-point access can be made directly at the device or from a cabinet using suitable USB or Bluetooth interfaces; point-to-bus access can be achieved via a gateway to reach multiple devices through a single entry point; and wireless access is enabled through Wi‑Fi infrastructure or local hotspots. Automatic hardware detection and rapid device discovery streamline the first connection and reduce configuration friction.
The configuration environment is built on an open Windows platform with a large device driver (DTM) library covering Endress+Hauser and third-party devices, enabling “out-of-the-box” connectivity for common industrial protocols such as HART, PROFIBUS, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, and Modbus. Embedded diagnostics aligned with NAMUR NE 107 support consistent interpretation of device states, and report generation functions support documentation needs such as configuration records, verification outputs, and instrument-specific views (e.g., echo curves).
Typical applications include commissioning campaigns, turnaround preparation, device replacement and re-range activities, and targeted troubleshooting when a device intermittently alarms or drifts. Integration with digital services such as Netilion Analytics and Netilion Library can centralize configuration reports and accelerate asset digitalization, supporting repeatable workflows and easier collaboration across disciplines.
